Chill House

House music aims for the transcendent. When done right, it can provide the soundtrack to euphoria on the dance floor. But sometimes that sense of escape arrives through a more tranquil side of the genre. Deep house, or “chill” house, occupies a different space, with atmospheric textures, melodic hooks and ethereal rhythms set at similar BPMs, but in a soothing key.

Reaching back to the ‘90s, innovators such as Moodymann, Groove Armada and Nightmares on Wax have been providing the lush sound of afterparties, pool parties and lounges around the globe. English duo Everything But the Girl teamed with house maestro Todd Terry on a remix of “Missing,” which went on to dominate dance around the world and bring deep house to the mainstream, with the track peaking at number two on the Billboard charts in 1995.

As the genre and culture evolved to reach global expansion over the years, one thing is universally evident: producers who can ignite the dance floor also come correct with chill vibes, showcasing the breadth of their talents. Canadian DJ and producer Jayda G, who is known to bring the heat, brings a chill vibe on “Circle Back Around,” while Jamie xx features hypnotic flavor on “Let’s Do it Again.” Sam Gellaitry, who garnered early attention for his synth-pop-inspired tracks, has been dropping ethereal dance cuts like “Alone.”

Recently, UK duo Disclosure, who have been innovating within the deep house scene for well over a decade now, received the remix treatment from Barry Can’t Swim, with the Edinburgh producer infusing “Higher Than Ever Before” with a fresh, vibrant energy. Elsewhere throughout the scene, Brazilian DJ/producer Zerb is blending tropical house elements with Afrobeat influences, such as on his track “Mwaki” featuring Sofiya Nzau, while producers like Bless You and Raphael DeLove are weaving in soulful, R&B influences and keeping the vibration high. To celebrate chill house’s transcendence, sonic diversity and restorative nature, we’ve compiled recent tracks from producers such as MÖWE, TSHA, Channel Tres, Logic1000 and many more to provide the perfect soundtrack for the lounge. Sit back and unwind!
