Nezi Momodu, the wordsmith from Dallas, Texas

Nezi Momodu is known as “The Wordplay Queen” for good reason, but the Dallas-based MC is just as passionate about art and poetry. She can fill the room with her presence, but it’s important for her to let fans into her world to get a better understanding of who she is. She’s Nigerian, Muslim, a painter, and very proud to have spent most of her life in Dallas. Momodu is also eager to take the next step in her career, which the First on SoundCloud program has helped her accomplish.

Nexi Momodu is taking her relationship with the platform to another level by taking us through her hometown in her First on Soundcloud Docuseries.

She takes viewers around Dallas to different locations which are important to her. She visits Ruins, noting that every aspiring rapper from the city is familiar with the venue after taking the stage and showing why she’s highly-respected in the local hip-hop circle.

“Put me on the verse and guarantee that I’m the truth / You can find me in the streets or you can meet me in the booth.”

“I wanted to make something that allowed people to see where the beauty was in this community and see leaders that represented people who gave us a little bit of escape.

Creative expression is therapeutic for Momodu, who remembers trying to find a place to fit in following her father’s death. “When I make music or when I create art, it’s all to feel a sense of home,” she explains. Overall, Momodu just wants to feel like she belongs. Whether she’s destroying cyphers or painting murals throughout Dallas, she’s carved out a place for herself.
